The school aims to create a collaborative environment for students and young researchers to acquire fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the field of fundamental and applied acoustics. The school includes lectures both on fundamentals of acoustics and on the latest achievements in acoustic metastructures and their real-world applications. The program will consist of lectures, practical classes with numerical and experimental tracks, hands-on workshops, and poster sessions, covering a wide range of topics such as:

Dr Yan Kei Chiang is a Lecturer at School of Engineering and Technology, UNSW Canberra. She works on metamaterials with unusual acoustic properties, exploiting their possibilities to engineer waves in unprecedented ways. She has strong experience in the design and measurement of acoustic metamaterials. Her expertise in acoustic metamaterials has made significant contributions to the control of acoustic radiation forces using acoustic metamaterials. She has been working on noise control and structural health monitoring for many years, which enable her to apply the outstanding metamaterials for different engineering purpose ranging from micro-electro-mechanical systems to medical science.
Dr Lujun Huang received Bachelor degree in Physics from East China Normal University in 2008. He obtained PhD degree in Material Science and Engineering from North Carolina States University in 2017. He worked as a postdoc scholar at the University of New South Wales from 2018-2021. He joined East China Normal University as professor since 2022. His research interests cover all-dielectric resonant nanophotonics, two-dimensional materials nanophotonics, acoustic metasurfaces, and acoustic bound states in the continuum. He has published 50+ papers in academic journals including Nature Reviews Physics, Nature Communications, Science advances, etc.
Pavel S. Petrov graduated from Mathematics Institute of Irkutsk State University in 2006. After that he joined V.I.Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI) as a PhD student. After receiving his PhD degree in theoretical physics (2010), he continued to work for POI as junior researcher and then as senior researcher. In 2019 Dr Petrov assumed the position of head laboratory at POI. The lab consists of two groups doing research in theoretical and computational acoustics and in geophysical fluid dynamics. Dr Petrov also hold professor position at Far Eastern Federal University where he teaches numerous courses in pure and applied mathematics and leads a master program. Dr Petrov had several scholarships in Germany (2014,2017,2019,2022, University of Wuppertal), France (2019, Elie Cartan Mathematical Institute), Israel (2017, University of Haifa) as well as at leading mathematical institutions in Russia, including Steklov Mathematical Institute (St. Petersburg) and Ishlinskiy Institute for Problems in Mechanics (Moscow). In 2021 he received highest Russian scientific degree doctor of science (equivalent for habilitation). In 2022-2023 Dr Petrov was employed as a guest professor at University of Wuppertal, Germany. Dr Petrov’s research interests include mathematical approaches in wave propagation modeling, theoretical and computational underwater acoustics, mathematical physics and asymptotic methods. His work was supported by more than 10 grants from Russia’s most important foundations.
Yong Li is a Full Professor and the Deputy Director of the Institute of Acoustics at Tongji University. He serves as the Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA). He earned his PhD in Acoustics from Nanjing University in 2013 and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Lorraine, France. Since late 2016, he has been with the Institute of Acoustics at Tongji University. His primary research focus is on the theory and application of acoustic metamaterials. He has published over 80 papers as the first or corresponding author in scientific journals such as Physical Review Letters, National Science Review, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Reviews Physics, and Reports on Progress in Physics, including 12 papers recognized as ESI Highly Cited Papers. His work has been frequently featured as editor’s picks and covered extensively by journals and websites like APS, AIP, Phys.org, Physics Buzz, and Science Daily. His publications have garnered over 8600 citations with an H-index of 41.
Dr. Xiaozhou Liu is Professor of Nanjing University and the President of Jiangsu Acoustics Society. He graduated from the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering of Nanjing University in 1998 with PhD Degree in Science. From 1999 to 2000, he was engaged in post-doctoral research in Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 2009, he was a visiting professor in the Materials Research Institute of Pennsylvania State University. He served as the director of the Key Laboratory of Modern Acoustics from 2010-2016. He has published more than 160 papers in academic journals and international conferences, authored 2 monographs and obtained twelve national invention patents in China. He received the second prize of Higher Education Science and Technology Progress Award in 2022, second prize of the Higher Education Natural Science Award in 2007 and third prize of the National Education Commission Science and Technology Progress Award in 1997. He has obtained 12 national invention patents. His current research interests include nonlinear acoustics, medical ultrasound and ultrasonic nondestructive testing.
Sergey A. Tsysar received the M.S. degree in physics in 2008 and the Ph.D. degree in acoustics in 2011 from Moscow State University (MSU), Moscow, Russia. After graduation from the Ph.D. program, he was appointed by MSU, where he is currently an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Physics. He has been affiliated with the International Tank Services (ITS, Asia Pacific), Singapore, to work on the propagation of ultrasonic (US) waves in a stratified fluid media and the utilization of acoustical and IR methods to profiling sediments in oil tanks. Dr Tsysar had scientific internships in France (2010, The French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, INSERM) and USA (2014, 2015, 2018, University of Washington). Dr Tsysar’s research interests pertain to the inverse problems in acoustics, acoustic holography, US transducers characterization, US imaging methods in non-destructive testing (NDT) and evaluation (NDE) and medical applications, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), acoustic radiation force measurements for particle manipulation and scaffold-free biofabrication. His work was supported by more than 10 grants from Russian scientific foundations.
Dr. A Hvatov graduated M.Sc. in Aalborg University, Denmark in 2018 under supervised by prof. Sergei Sorokin and defended his PhD thesis in Russia in 2020 under supervision of prof. Sergei Sorokin. Alex is co-author of series of papers of periodic structure acoustics that are published mostly in Journal of Sound and Vibration. Now Alexander is a Composite AI lab head, ITMO University, Russia. Alex mostly interested in the classical mathematical models such as partial differential equations and mathematical physics methods from artificial intelligence point of view. Another direction of Alex’s research is the wave propagation in periodic structures.
Dr. Xinlong Wang currently is a professor in Institute of Acoustics & Department of Physics at Nanjing University. He received his Ph.D. degree in acoustics from Nanjing University in 1991, and then, he became a faculty member of Nanjing University, having worked on the research fields of physical acoustics, nonlinear waves and solitons. In 1999, he was awarded as the National Outstanding Young Scholar by the NFSC. And in 2001, he became a special professorship of the Cheung Kong Scholars Programme. He once visit California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as a visiting associate, respectively, in 2004 and 2009. So far, he has published more than sixty research articles in physical and acoustical journals including Nat. Phys., Phys. Rev. Lett., Phys. Rev. E, and J. Acoust. Soc. Am. etc. He has been the lecturer of the undergraduate course, Fundamentals of Acoustics, since 2006, and the graduate course, Theoretical Acoustics, since 2014, for students majoring acoustics here at Nanjing University.
Yabin Jin is associate professor at School of Mechanical and Power Engineering in East China University of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Micro and Nano Technology, Acoustics and Telecommunication from University of Lille (France) and Ph.D. in Mechanics from Tongji University in March 2017. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physical Acoustics in University of Bordeaux from April 2017 to August 2018, then as a researcher at School of Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics in Tongji University from September 2018 to February 2024. His research group focuses on the elastic wave propagation in complex media and application in ultrasonics testing, vibration and noise reduction. He published 2 books/chapters, applied/granted 8 patents. He also published over 50 peer-reviewed articles as the first or corresponding author in well-known journals including Reports on Progress in Physics, Nature Communications, with h-index of 28 (Google Scholar). He was selected as Young Elite Scientists Sponsorship Program by CAST, Shanghai Distinguished Professor (Eastern Scholar), World’s Top 2% Scientists (2022, 2023) by Elsevier/Stanford University and received China Top Cited Paper Award (2023) by IOP Publishing. He is the Associate Editor of Wave Motion, the Editorial Board member of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Guest Editor of APL Materials, invited professor of University of Lille
Prof. Wang Yifan is the Nanyang Assistant Professor at School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, where he leads the “Robotic Materials” Group. Prof. Wang received his Ph.D. in Soft Matter Physics from The University of Chicago, USA (2016), and B.S. in Physics from Peking University, China (2011). Prior to joining Nanyang Technological University in 2020, Dr. Wang worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at California Institute of Technology, USA. Prof. Wang is an innovative applied physicist and engineer with extensive experience on mechanical metamaterials, soft materials, soft robotics, and advanced manufacturing. He has published papers in top international journals, including Nature, Nature Materials, Physical Review Letters, Matter, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, etc. He is the associate editor of Mechanics of Materials journal, and have won numerous awards including the Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge Catalyst Award, Nanyang Assistant Professorship Award, Grainger Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Experimental Physics, etc.
Yifan Zhu is currently a professor at School of Mechanical Engineering of Southeast University, He received Ph.D. degree in the Institute of Acoustics of Nanjing University, China in 2018. He worked as a post-doctor in Institut Jean Lamour of CNRS in France during 2018-2021. His research interests focus on acoustic metamaterials, acoustic and elastic metasurfaces, noise and vibration controls, et al. He published over 20 papers as the first or corresponding author in international journals including, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Physical Review X, Advanced Functional Materials, et al. Google Scholar citation is 2500. H-index is 27.
Dr. Nansha Gao, Associate Professor in Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. Dr. Gao’s research fields mainly include acoustic metamaterial, phononic crystal, and vibration/noise control. He has published over 90 scientific papers along with 20 patents, with more than 2800 citations (H-index of 29). In the past decade, his main research has been applied in solving environmental noise pollution control and noise reduction design of industrial equipment. He has won numerous scientific and technological awards from various levels of government in China, and also served as a review expert of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, an expert in vibration and noise control at the Shaanxi Provincial Environmental Survey and Assessment Center, a young council member of the China Metamaterials Society, a young council member of the China Shipbuilding Engineering Society, and the China Mechanical Engineering Society, youth editorial board member of “Rare Metals”, “Sound & Vibration”, “Additive Manufacturing Frontiers”, and “Microstructures”. He has collaborated with renowned universities in China, as well as renowned acoustic research centers in Europe and the United States, to conduct fundamental research and technology development
Dr. Yongyao Chen is a full Professor of Underwater Acoustic Engineering at the Harbin Engineering University, China. He is the Director of the Institute of Marine Information and System at Qingdao Innovation and Development Center of Harbin Engineering University, Qingdao, China. Dr. Chen received B.S. and M.S degree in Information Engineering from Tianjin University (China), in 2003 and 2007, respectively, and got Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University (US) in 2012. His research fields include acoustic and optical sensing technologies, marine information and systems, acoustic and optic functional materials. The related research results are published in prestigious international journals such as Nature Communications、Applied Physics Letters、Optics Express etc. Prof. Chen’s current effort is to establish an interdisciplinary research program, taking advantages of both acoustic and optical technologies. The new knowledge and novel devices resulting from this program are expected to significantly impact many fronts in the field of marine information technology.
Wei Luo received the B.S. degree in electronic science and technology and the Ph.D. degree in microelectronics and solid state electronics from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. From 2009 to 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. In 2012, he joined the School of Optics and Electronic Information, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. From 2014 to 2016, he was a visiting scholar in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. He is currently a Professor and assistant Dean with the School of Integrated Circuits, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include high-frequency acoustic MEMS sensors for application in harsh environments and intelligent microsystems.
Prof. Shuangjie Zhang received his bachelor and Ph.D. degrees from National University of Singapore in 2010 and 2018, respectively. From 2010 to 2020, he was a Product Manager at Microfine Materials Technologies Pte, Ltd (Singapore) and was in charge of underwater transducer development and processing of relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystals. In 2021 and 2022, he was selected into the National Youth Talent Program and Excellence Youth Talent of Shandong Province, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor at Qingdao Innovation and Development center of Harbin Engineering University. His research interests include underwater acoustic transducers and arrays, relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystals, and piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials and devices.

We delve into the world of mathematical models in periodic structures. Namely we look at the several
models of acoustic
waveguides through the lens of the Floquet theory and unlock the secrets of pass- and stop-bands
prediction. In this
lecture, we will navigate through three topics: the acoustic waveguides models, the principles of
classical Floquet
theory, and simplifying computations using symmetric cell eigenfrequencies. Several modern research
directions are also
be tackled.
Alexander Hvatov
An open acoustic system with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian support a series of
acoustic resonances. The emergence of
acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces provides abundant freedom in tailoring acoustic resonances.
Acoustic resonances
are always acompanied by the amplication of pressure field and phase change of 180 degree. Thus,
they have been widely
used for manipulating the proprogation of acoustc wave and enhancing acoustic wave-matter
interactions. In this talk, we
discuss the fundamental physics of acoustic resonances in non-Hermitian systems and their
applications in acoustic
absorption, scattering and emission. We will also discuss a special type of acoustic resonances so
called bound states
in the continuum. Then, tunable acoustic metasurfaces will be surveyed to show how acoustic
resonances can be actively
controlled. Finally, we will discuss acoustic resonances engineering in parity-time symmetry system
by introducing gain
and loss.
Lujun Huang
Low-power medical ultrasound is widely used for imaging and diagnostic clinical
applications. High-intensity focused
ultrasound (HIFU) can be used for destruction of tumors in various organs and performing neurosurgical
operations in the
deep structures of the human brain. Although in modern HIFU systems the main physical mechanism is
tissue heating due to
continuous waves absorption, there is growing interest in the use of pulsed modes with a large amplitude
with nonlinear
shock front formation at the focus. Such modes make it possible to significantly expand the range of
bioeffects caused
by ultrasound. New applications are rapidly developing, such as the destruction of blood clots and large
hematomas,
targeted drug delivery, abscess treatment and combined immunotherapy. A brief review of modern clinical
applications in
urology, cardiology, gastroenterology, bioengineering and immunology is provided. New experimental and
numerical methods
for accurate reconstruction of transducer vibration pattern for setting a boundary condition in the
modeling and
treatment planning are considered; examples of HIFU transducers to achieve the required amplitudes of
the shock front at
the focus are given; physical mechanisms of mechanical and thermal effects on tissue, cavitation effects
in tissue, the
influence of acoustic properties of tissue on nonlinear focusing and in situ field parameters, features
of acoustic and
MRI visualization of the affected area, features of morphological and ultrastructural changes in tissue
caused by
ultrasound are discussed. Current work was financially supported by the Russian Science Foundation (RSF
20-12-00145).

This report introduces the basic principles and analysis methods of nonlinear
acoustics in solids, with a focus on the
theory and applications of nonlinear acoustics in ultrasonic non-destructive testing, metamaterials,
and other fields.
It includes the foundations of nonlinear acoustics in solids and the nonlinear propagation of sound
waves in solids,
phononic crystals and metamaterials.
Xiaozhou Liu
Wave equations governing sound waves in ideal fluid are derived from the fundamental equations
of motion
of fluids, and the intrinsic differences of sound waves from water waves are stressed. Basic
properties
of sound waves are discussed briefly. Then, sound reflection and transmission in layered media
are formulated,
with particular attention paid to the analogy with the transmission line of electrical
circuits and the
concept of impedance matching/mismatching to understanding the sound insulation and resonant
transmission.
Mathematical formulation of sound radiation is presented, with special emphasis on the
role of Green
function in solving radiation problems. Finally, propagation of acoustics waves in tubes
and perforated
plates are succinctly discussed, with emphasis on how viscosity affects attenuation of sound
waves
in artificial materials like metamaterials.
Xinlong Wang
Abstract: Sound-absorbing materials (SAMs) have attracted significant interest for more than
a century owing
to their rich physical properties and extensive potential in acoustic engineering.
In this talk,
I will provide an overview of recent progress in and future prospects for SAMs, from
single
resonators to coupled resonant systems. Single resonant SAMs use resonances to achieve
high-efficiency
absorption in a certain bandwidth with a significantly smaller thickness than porous
SAMs. The emergence
of sound-absorbing metamaterials has led to further thinner structures
at deep-subwavelength scales.
Coupled resonant systems offer new opportunities for broadband sound absorption and multifunctionality.
I will
introduce the conservation equations for single resonators and general SAMs, outlining the design
strategies for
achieving tunable and broadband SAMs approaching the optimal conditions governed by the
conservation equations.
I will also review recent developments in multifunctional SAMs and metaliners. Finally,
I will provide
an outlook on potential directions and applications for future work in this rapidly
evolving field.
Yong Li
A review of modern methods of sound propagation modeling based on their representation in the form of an
expansion over
normal modes is presented. Most of the described methods are within the framework of an approach to
calculating mode
amplitudes by solving parabolic equations of various types, both narrow-angle and wide-angle.
Two-dimensional methods
for calculating acoustic fields, to which the above-mentioned three-dimensional approaches can be
reduced, are also
considered. The computation of both time-harmonic acoustic fields and pulse signals is discussed. A
number of numerical
examples are considered in which such calculations are performed
taking into account three-dimensional sound propagation effects. The calculation of particle
accelerations at the pulse
signal reception points, as well as the calculation of the acoustic energy density flux, can be also
performed within
this approach.
Pavel Petrov
From nanoscale to macroscale, the behaviors and functions of elastic waves in solids are strongly
demanded in various
areas. Different from air-borne and water-borne acoustic waves, elastic waves can be dispersive and
multimodal. It is
important to make clear the properties of each kind of elastic waves that is the fundamental to
different topics such as
NDT, metamaterials, sensing, et al. In this lecture, you will learn about the basic information (such as
equation of
motion, dispersion equation, transmission and reflection) of elastic waves in infinite bulk solids, half
infinite
solids, plates and beams. By the end of the lecture, you will have knowledge of theoretical fundamentals
to analyze
elastic waves in a given type of solid and the link to study elastic wave functions in your study.

In this talk, I will firstly show an introduction of acoustic metamaterial with some basic theory. Then
I will display
some works for the designs of different acoustic metamaterials with multifunctional sound manipulations,
including
one-way sound manipulations, acoustic holograms, origami acoustic metamaterials, etc. These different
designs show the
powerful ability of acoustic metamaterial for various sound manipulations.

Due to severe absorption of electromagnetic waves in water, acoustic wave has been considered to be the
only effective
long-range underwater information carrier. Underwater acoustic transducers, which are the key components
of SONAR (Sound
Navigation and Ranging) system, are responsible for generation and reception of underwater acoustic
waves. Nowadays,
underwater acoustic transducers and have been widely applied in various applications such as underwater
target
detection, identification and tracking, underwater communication, marine resources exploitation, and
marine
environmental monitoring, etc. This lecture includes a brief introduction on the development history,
typical
structures, and key specifications of underwater acoustic transducers. The current status of underwater
acoustic
transducers, and challenges to meet the growing demands in both civil and defense applications will also
be discussed.
Shuangjie Zhang
High-frequency acoustic sensors have always been hotspot in the field of sensing systems. There are two
types of
acoustic sensors. One is to use sound waves to detect physical quantities, such as gas, temperature,
pressure, etc., and
the other type is to use changes in physical quantities to detect sound waves. In this lecture, we will
introduce the
basic principles of these two types of devices in detail. In order to meet the needs of miniaturization
and integration
for practical application, we will introduce the design, preparation and characterization of
high-frequency acoustic
sensors based on MEMS platforms. The latest research progress and application of these devices will be
also introduced
in the lecture. By the end of the lecture, you will have knowledge of the theoretical basis and
practical application
skills of high-frequency acoustic sensors.
Wei Luo
The development of novel hydroacoustic functional materials and devices is crucial for achieving
breakthroughs in future
ocean exploration, sonar systems, underwater communication, acoustic imaging and underwater stealth
technologies. The
underwater acoustic metamaterials can effectively control and manipulate sound waves in the underwater
environment,
which is an emerging front, not only conceptually fascinating but also hold great promise for broad
applications. The
objective of this lecture is to achieve a fundamental understanding of underwater acoustic
metamaterials, for guiding,
amplification, absorption and isolation of sound waves in underwater environment, and to explore novel
methodologies for
control and manipulation of underwater acoustic waves with functionalized metamaterials and devices.
Through combined
theoretical, numerical, and experimental lectures, researchers could enrich the knowledge in the growing
field of
underwater acoustic metamaterials, and learn useful skills such as theoretical analysis, numerical
simulations and
experimental methods for underwater acoustic metamaterials.
Prof. Yongyao Chen, Prof. Nansha Gao
Mechanical metamaterials are structured lattices whose properties arise from the selection of both their
constitutive
composition and underlying micro- or meso-structures. Most existing mechanical metamaterials are
intrinsically passive,
with shape and properties fixed once manufactured. This limits their applications in areas where
material adaptivity and
tunability are required. In this lecture, I will introduce the development of metamaterials whose shape
and mechanical
properties can be controlled and can adapt to varying environmental conditions. Firstly, I will show
mechanical
metamaterials with interlocking particles that has controllable stiffness and reconfigurable shape
triggered by the
jamming transition, which can be used for wearable robotics. Then, I will introduce deployable
structures from
architected building blocks, which combine multiple functions: shape-changing, stiffness-variation, and
self-sensing
into one monolithic structure. These lecture provides insights into the next generation of mechanical
metamaterials that
adapt and tune their properties to varying environmental conditions, with applications ranging from
wearable robots,
medical supports, reconfigurable architectures, etc.
Yifan Wang
Acoustic metamaterials are advanced materials of subwavelength scale which possess anomalous properties
that do not
exist in conventional materials. It opens up an opportunity to engineer wavefront propagation in unusual
ways.
Conventionally, acoustic wave is reflected (or refracted) based of the Snell’s law for reflection (or
refraction)
assuming that the phase of wave changes gradually with the propagating path. This classic Snell’s law
was revisit in
2011. It has been proven that a new degree of freedom for manipulating the wave propagation can be
achieved by
introducing abrupt phase shift along the surface between two media. The emergence of acoustic
metasurfaces, which are
the two-dimensional form of acoustic metamaterials, enables a fully spatial control of phase and/or
amplitude of wave.
It provides a promising ability to implement local phase shifts following the generalised Snell’s law to
generate
complex wavefronts for beam steering, beam focusing, self-bending beam and perfect absorption. This
lecture will cover
the fundamental principle of the generalised Snell’s law and introduce the metastructures that are
commonly used to
construct acoustic metasurfaces. It will discuss the general design principle of the acoustic
metasurface for wavefront
engineering.
Yan Kei Chiang
All students will be divided into several groups according to their educational track and will carry out
their
individual work within the framework of the chosen task.
Each group will present their results and share the experience obtained during practical classes.
For that each group should prepare a short presentation
in ppt/pptx or pdf format (there is no obligatory template).
Timing of the presentations: 5-7 minutes to present the
results, 3-5 minutes Q&A.
The registration fee is 450 euro and covers tuition, practical classes, social events, coffee-breaks, lunches, a conference dinner and accommodation on campus (see the detailed information in Accommodation). Selection of the School participants is made on the basis of the applicant’s CV and motivation letter. All participants are invited to present their research at the poster session.

The School provides the participants with on-campus accommodation (shared rooms with facilities on the floor). A foreign citizen traveling to China should have a valid passport (expiry date should be no earlier than 6 months from the date of applying for a visa) and a visa.
Please note: the citizens of Belarus and Kazakhstan can stay in China without a visa for 30 days.
Steps to get the visa (type F):
Citizens of Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Malaysia are able to enter China without Visa, with the regular passport, to make business and tourist trips and visit relatives and friends for 15 days.
